  <title>Home vs Miami RFC - 2/20/10</title>
  <link>http://www.hammerheadrugby.com/live/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=168</link>
<description>Not a good result for the Hammerheads this past Saturday. I believe the final tally was 63-0 Miami. It is one of those years where our numbers are down and Miami&#039;s are up. They travelled to is in a tour bus, 40 strong. They also beat UF&#039;s B side 13-12 in the second game of the day.

On a positive note, our line-outs went well for once, but our scrums and team defense suffered all day.

There is still a month of rugby left, including Ruggerfest this Saturday in Ft Lauderdale. We also will be playing Renegades in Atlanta on March 20. We need all hands on deck for that one. We know how they play, as we lost to them on a last second try in Nashville last year. Let&#039;s finish out the season strong.

  <title>Hammerheads at Ft. Lauderdale - 2/7/10</title>
  <link>http://www.hammerheadrugby.com/live/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=167</link>
<description>The Hammerheads travelled light this past Saturday to Ft Lauderdale. I believe we had 19 if you include Coach Larry, who had to come in at the end of the game when Brandon Pierson got hurt. It also included retired family doctor, Doc Mannschrek, who started at tight head prop. Ft Lauderdale, who are in a rebuilding year, also had a lot of gray hairs out there. It looked like an Old Boys match at times.

Naples kicked off to start the game with a strong wind at our backs. I assume Ft Lauderdale chose to have the wind in the second half. Naples escaped an early near try by Ft Lauderdale on a kick and chase. The balls were bouncing funny with the wind. Naples regrouped and did well in some scrums deep in our end. Naples got on the board first when Ryan Shore ran towards the goal line and had the ball bounce backwards somehow. Old Boy Ken Dunne scooped it up and put it down in what coach Larry described as slow motion. Kevin Biada then scored to make it 14-0 before Ft Lauderdale scored a try of their own. Naples scored from the wing to make it 19-7 at half.

Ft Lauderdale did not go away in the second half, making it 19-14 on some Naples missed or high tackles. Naples responded from the wing again to make it 24-14, and seemed to be in control. However, Ft Lauderdale punched one in, in the waning minutes, to make it 24-21. Naples scrums did well. The game ended with the ball deep in Ft Lauderdale&#039;s end. All in all, a very tough and gritty game. Many thanks for some Hammerheads stepping up, considering many of our impact players were out due to injury or personal commitments. Line outs continue to be somewhat of an issue.

Let&#039;s all have fun this weekend at our Alumni match.

  <title>Hammerheads vs. Miamia Tridents - 1/23</title>
  <link>http://www.hammerheadrugby.com/live/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=166</link>
<description>Naples, FL Hammerheads defeated Miami Tridents 12-5 in a very physical match, on Saturday, Jan 23, 2010 in Estero, Florida. The Florida weather started relatively sunny and cool, but got hotter and more humid as the day progressed, so that energy levels were sapped a bit. Miami went up early 5-0 with a try in the corner. Naples responded with two tries of their own before the half. Hammerhead&#039;s speedy winger, Ty Lloyd, scored one and Scrum Half Shane Young scored the other. Fly Half Andrew Marcus converted one of the two tries.

The first half saw both a Miami Trident, and a Naples Hammerhead get sin binned. The Trident was yellow carded for purposely tripping an opponent, and the Hammerhead was binned for a one leg take down, pile drive tackle.

The second half, there was no scoring. The Tridents seemed to have an advantage in possession, but the Naples defense did not break. There was one altercation where fists were thrown. This is nothing new when Tridents and Hammerheads get together.</description>

  <title>Reunion Weekend Recap</title>
  <link>http://www.hammerheadrugby.com/live/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=165</link>
<description>Fun weekend for Naples RFC, in its 18th year of existence. Friday night, we had a get together at Johnny Malloy&#039;s in Bonita. Despite the bad road conditions with rain and snowbirds everywhere, at least 20 or so turned up for beer, soda, wings and pizza.

Saturday, the Cape/Lely squad shut out the Ft Lauderdale high school team, 3 tries to nil I believe, in the noon game. Then, the real fun started. The Old Boys vs the Young Guns. There was a lot of scoring. I lost track of the score a bit. I believe the Oldsters struck first with a try before the young&#039;uns scored a couple. The olds tied it up at 14 before the youngsters took a 28-14 lead. On one of their tries, Ryan Shore kicked off. Jason Boehm of the olds was prepared to catch the ball for a return, but instead, Kevin Biada snagged the ball in mid air and ran for a try, leaving Jason looking like he was holding an invisible pile of fire wood. The Oldsters scored the next two tries, but missed a couple of conversions. Pat O&#039;Donnell was kicking at young human targets instead of between the posts. The 4th Old Boy try was scored on the opening 2nd half kickoff. With a little trickery, Olds feigned switching sides. The Ref switched us back, and Pat kicked a nice one that Matt Cook grabbed and ran for a try down the sidelines. He may have tweaked his hammy, as he was done for the day. The youngsters responded to score and add to the lead (I guess making it 35-24, or 35-26 - ref Lisa O&#039;Donnell may have given the Olds couple bonus points). All their tries were breakaway runs, as you could imagine. I must give credit to some of the old boys who actually chased them down and caught up to them a few times. I know I wasn&#039;t one of the chasers. In any event, I think that was the end of the youngster scores. Old Boys scored the last two tries, so maybe we did win it. Not so sure. Roy Monk scored a try, Jeremy King and Matty had 2 apiece at least. I know I am missing one. Youngsters had breakaway tries and some nice passing. I am sure Ryan Shore had one or two. Brandon Pierson ran very well. Big Walter had some nice runs, Garrett, etc. Old Boys controlled the scrums. Not sure how the social was. Had to miss this year.

  <title>Hammerheads at Key West - 11/7/09</title>
  <link>http://www.hammerheadrugby.com/live/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=164</link>
<description>What a game and weekend. You truly missed out on something special, if you could not make the trip. It was a match under the lights of a cool Key West night, and strong winds from tropical storm Ida, on the Sigsbee Naval Annex.

Naples were chock full of old decrepit vets and youngsters. We had 14 starters to begin the game before Kiwi Webster put on a jersey and Matt Cook&#039;s boots. Both he and Larry Fox came to the pitch after a couple days of carousing on the island. I know vodka has no smell, but I did see the remnants of Bloody Mary on their faces.

The game started with a very comfortable feeling pack with Coach Larry winning ball left and right from the hooker position. The front row of Tom, Larry and Magoo were doing their magic against a larger Key West pack. The second row of gimpy Ken and Keith Hopkins did their job as well. Adam MacKenzie and Webster flanked while Erik Reedstrom tried his hand at the 8 man position. Shane Young played scrum half and our back line consisted of Pat O&#039;Donnell (man of the match), Callum McKenzie, Kevin Biada, Garret Coe, Dom Romano, and Anthony Carriulo.

The first half saw Naples fighting into a furious wind, but consistently in the Key West end. Unfortunately, due to high winds and other various snafus, Key West broke a couple the other way for a 10-0 half time lead. They missed both conversions with the wind. The second half, Naples had the wind (good choice Pat), but Key West scored another try to put them up 15-0. Naples did not panic with the odds stacked against them. Ken Dunne, using the power of his moustache to propel himself, scored a try and Pat converted from the far corner, using the wind to assist him. That made it 15-7. Naples wasn&#039;t done. Kevin Biada scored in almost the exact place and way as Dunne, and again Pat converted with the high winds, to make it 15-14. The game was going down to the wire and Naples had the ball. I noticed Coach Larry mumbling something to the ref. He was probably coherent at this point, as all the alcohol fuel was drained from his system. I don&#039;t know what was said, but the game went a couple minutes longer into injury time when Naples were awarded a penalty. Pat set up, once again, without a tee, in almost the same exact spot as the 2 conversions. Key West fans were livid on the sidelines. Here we go....the kick...the wind sends it sailing.....it&#039;s good!!!. The game is then whistled over! Yee hood! Time to party Hammerhead style!!!!

Special thanks to all that made it down. I am sure I am forgetting someone, as I am still a bit hazy from that glorious weekend.

  <title>Battle of the Hammerheads - 09/19/09</title>
  <link>http://www.hammerheadrugby.com/live/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=162</link>
  <description>Hammerhead Nation,

Your own Naples, FL RFC won the inaugural, &#039;Battle of the Hammerheads&#039;, this past weekend in Brunswick, GA by the score of 45-24.

Things were a bit sloppy for us in the first half. The Golden Isles, GA Hammerheads were not going to lay down for us. They were a very hard rucking, but inexperienced team with one good runner, one enforcer, and a spirited bunch of other guys. Not bad for a D3 side, in close proximity to Jacksonville, FL. Many current or former military guys filled out their large roster. Many new ruggers showed up for the bash.

Naples controlled the start of the game. It was apparent their pack could be pushed when necessary and we ended up with a scrum on their 5 meter line. Anticipating an early try, this old boy was shocked to get out of the scrum and see Golden Isles running the other way with the ball, 95 meters for the first score of the game. &quot;Serenity now!&quot;, I thought to myself. Stay calm. In our backline&#039;s defense, the Golden Isles defense was offsides all day long, with lots of penetration. The ref was letting it slide, I assume, as it was a friendly game.

Halftime score was 14-12 us. I did not feel we would lose the match, our first of the new season, and Golden Isles&#039; 3rd, but we were making things too hard on ourselves with dropped balls and bad passes. First game stuff (hopefully). The start of the second half, we had them pinned in their end. I was about to lay a mega hit on one of their boys. I saw the fear in his eyes. I apparently created a screen with my mega whiteness as well. The bright and hot sun must have reflected on my skin to blind the guy, as he unloaded a pass. Ryan Shore snuck out from behind me, picked off the pass, and ran it in easily. That was basically the turning point in the match, in my opinion. It took the wind out of their sails, as we went up 21-12. They did not give up, but the end result was never in doubt. We scored 4 more tries, and they scored 2 more. Daragh Carr converted a total of 5 out of 7 conversions, on a windy, hot and sunny day. Final score Naples Hammerheads 45 Golden Isles Hammerheads 24.

The social was at a nearby biker beach bar. Young Vinny (not Las Vegas Vinny) won &#039;Man of the Match&#039;. I was impressed with him and his twin Brandon. Our young boys kicked some butt. Our old boys helped out too, along with our regular starters. Golden Isles was supposed to provide a trophy for this annual event, but did not come through. A certain group of our guys took matters into their own hands and performed a stealthy military operation to swipe their big team crest shield that was hanging at the bar. Its location now is a mystery. It could still be in the woods of Brunswick.

Thanks to everyone who made the 6.5/7 hr drive each way for this. You did not let me down Naples Hammerheads!!!! We will see them next year down here. They did an awesome job making us welcome. We will return the favor next year.
