Treasure Coast coming to Naples for friendly match

The Treasure Coast Rugby Club is traversing the state Saturday, March 3 to the fields in Estero for a friendly match against the Naples squad.
"We are going to give everybody an opportunity to play and work with different guys," Naples captain Bryan Vince said.
Players are asked to show up at 2:45 p.m. for the 3 p.m. start of a training session. After an hour workout, the sides will square off for a 90-minute exhibition match.
The friendly is a warm-up as the Naples squad heads into the second half of the spring season with a home match March 10 against Miami. The Hammerheads won the first two games of the season heading into two final homestands at Estero, where they were undefeated last year.
After the match, Jerry and Laurie Vandetti are hosting a backyard Chickee Bar and Pool party in honor of Coach Ken and Naomi Simmons, who are moving to Gainesville after leaving a lasting impression on the Naples rugby club.
The Hammerhead fields in Estero are located on Williams Road next to the golf driving range. For more information, call Vince at 239-910-2758.

Naples goes perfect for season on the road with victory over St. Petersburg

Naples Hammerhead Rugby showed its resilience this weekend in holding onto a 20-13 victory against the Pelicans Saturday in St. Petersburg.
The Hammerheads rushed out to a 17-8 lead at halftime and held on for the victory 20-13 after a hard-fought defensive second half.
"The boys played well," Naples vice-captain David Shoff said. "We showed a lot of heart there at the end."
The victory puts Naples at a perfect 2-0 in away games in the shortened spring season. After a three-week layoff, the Hammerheads face Miami March 10 before finishing the regular season March 24 against St. Petersburg.
The Hammerheads need to finish in the top two of their three-team division to make the Florida championship playoffs. If Naples wins its playoff game, it will advance to the South Championship regional tournament.

Feb. 25/26th - Ruggerfest - Ft. Lauderdale
Mar. 17/18th - Savannah or friendly match - Home
Mar. 31st - vs. Daytona - Away
Apr. 14th - vs. Orlando - Home
Apr. 21st - vs. Jacksonville (Friendly) - Away
East coast: Training Tuesday/Thursday evenings at 6:30pm.
West coast: Training Thursday evenings at 6:30pm.
