Men's 15's Playoffs in sight with men's victory over Miami
Posted by bradkane on Monday, March 12, 2007 (05:22:25) (361 reads)

The Naples Hammerhead Rugby men's team earned a home playoff game with a 46-22 victory over Miami Saturday.

"We've still got to go one match at a time," Hammerhead captain Bryan Vince said. "You can't look past that."

The Miami victory gives Naples a perfect 3-0 record on the year with one final regular season game remaining against the St. Petersburg Pelicans March 24 in Estero. In that regular season finale game, the Hammerheads will pay tribute to long-time rugger Bill Crothers, who lost a long struggle with cancer last fall.

After the season finale, the Florida playoffs start April 14, with Naples playing at home against a yet-to-be-decided opponent. The team's goal of the rugby south championship lies beyond that.

The four practices leading up to the St. Pete game and the ones that follow to the Florida playoff will be used to correct the mistakes of the Miami game, where the squad suffered from poor conditioning, penalties and some bad decision making.

"The effort is there, but we need to be a little better playing as a team," Vince said. "We didn't play the way we should have to start the game."

Miami and the Hammerheads traded scores to start the game, ending in a 17-17 tie at halftime. The Naples squad reeled off some long runs and breakaways, but a hard-running Miami team kept it close with sustained drives that were aided by Hammerhead penalties and miscues.

"All the penalties slowed us down," Hammerhead forward Alex Smith said. "We were making the same penalties over and over again."

Unlike its first two games where the Naples team was plagued by a slow-starting second half, the Hammerheads came out firing in the final period against Miami.

"In the first half, the forwards did pretty well," Smith said. "The second half was all the backs."

Long runs by the backline -- many of which were converted to tries and one penalty kick -- put the game out of reach in the second half as the Hammerheads outscored Miami 29-5. The final score was 46-22.

Back Kevin Biada was the overwhelming choice for Man of the Match. Although Biada never scored himself, he reeled off several long runs, setting up tries and keeping the Miami opponents on their heels.

"It felt good to be out there and playing again," Biada said. "A lot of my runs were set up by guys giving good passes ... and the runs were kept going because people were there in support. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the support."

Scrumhalf Mike Seifollahi was Man of the Match runner-up for his hard play and two tries scored off long runs to ice the game.

Even though the Miami team didn't want to play a B match, the Naples squad divided up players and spectators to have a short-handed B game after the 46-22 victory. The two Hammerhead sides traded tries throughout including one by Zulu warrior Derek Ludick and two by Ben Flynn.

After the B game, Ludick received the Man of the Match B game honor while the runner-up went to Jeremy Linne, who also played in the final minutes of the A side match as scrumhalf.

The Hammerhead squad resumes its normal practice schedule Tuesday, March 13 at the fields in Estero. It has only four practices before the rematch March 24 against St. Pete, which the Hammerheads won 20-13.

Men's 15's Men's season to resume March 10 home against Miami
Posted by bradkane on Monday, March 05, 2007 (01:22:07) (317 reads)

(Estero) After starting a perfect 2-0 on the year, the Naples Hammerhead Rugby men's team will resume its spring season March 10 against Miami at the fields in Estero.

"Come on out and have a good time watching us," Hammerhead Vice-captain Dave Schoff said.

The match March 10 is the start of a two-game homestand to determine the seedings for the Florida playoffs, which start in April. The Hammerheads were victorious in their first two games on the year including winning in Miami 42-7.

If Naples can win March 10 and against March 24 against St. Petersburg on its home pitch, where the team was perfect last year, it will get a top seeding for the Florida playoff, which is a precursor to the South Regional Championship.

"The keys to winning are just doing the basics," Schoff said. "Everybody doing their job."

When the match against Miami starts at 2 p.m., the Hammerheads will play their first live game in three weeks. The club players filled the void by playing in a rugby tournament in Fort Lauderdale Feb. 24 and in an exhibition game against the Treasure Coast squad on March 4.

"We've had some pretty intensive training these past few weeks and having the friendly against Treasure Cost this past week helped out a lot," Schoff said.

The match starts at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10 in Estero. The pitch is off Williams Road between Estero High School and a golf driving range. Rugby is played on the northernmost field.

Men's 15's Final regular season game to honor fallen rugger
Posted by bradkane on Monday, March 05, 2007 (01:21:07) (346 reads)

Naples Hammerhead Rugby is calling on all ruggers past and present to attend the March 24 home match in Estero to honor a fallen player who contributed greatly to the establishment and continued success of the club.

Long-time member Bill Crothers passed away late last year after a long struggle with cancer. The club chooses to honor his memory with a day of festivites surrounding the March 24 match against St. Petersburg.

"Bill had a zest for life," Hammerhead captain Bryan Vince said. "He contributed greatly to our club; he will always be remembered by anybody whose been in the club at any time."

To memorialize Bill, there will be a moment of silence before the start of the 2 p.m. game and his old boots will be placed at the midfield sideline. T-shirts will be sold to benefit his family and offset costly medical expenses.

After the match against St. Pete, there will be a full B-side match where all of Bill's old mates will have the opportunity to play. Following the B-game, ruggers will gather for a social at Stoney's Sports Cafe so those who didn't get the chance to know Bill can learn from those who did.

The March 24 game against St. Pete is the last regular season home match before the playoffs. Naples rugby is 2-0 heading into the March 10 home game against Miami, and the finale two weeks later will have playoff implications.

The match for now is set at the Estero pitch off Williams Road. It is between Estero High School and a golf driving range.
