Posted by bvince9 on Sunday, July 27, 2008 (23:18:50) (35 reads)

Saturday 7/26 was a great day of 7s Rugby on Ft. Myers Beach!!! Congrats to both the Men's and Women's sides for keeping the hardware here in SWF! Special thanks to the Holiday Inn, all of our sponsors, and those who worked hard to make this a successful event!!!

Thanks to those that donated to the families of Andrew Widman, Ricky Pigott and Mark Niedermeyer...

Please check out the below article in the Ft. Myers News-Press reporting the event.

Just before the start of the second half of the men's open championship rugby match, Skip Green of the Naples Hammerheads looked at teammate Ryan Shore and said, "Let's see some magic out there." Shore proceeded to take the second-half kickoff back for a score that sparked the Hammerheads to a 16-7 win over the University of Florida on Saturday in their sixth Barefoot Beach 7s Rugby Tournament behind Holiday Inn on Fort Myers Beach.

Joining Naples as a champion was Naples-Coconut Grove in the women's open division. Called the Hawaiian Hotties for this tournament, they beat the University of Central Florida 13-4.

Fort Lauderdale defeated Naples 20-4 for the old boys' over 35 title and the Tampa Pelicans beat the Fort Lauderdale Nomads 20-3 for the high school championship.

After winning their first two games 31-5 and 30-8, Naples found itself down 7-3 at halftime after the Gators took advantage of a second turnover to score. In beach rugby, teams have seven players, there are seven-minute halves and they get three, four or five points depending on where they take the ball in the Tri Zone.

"The guys were not having fun," said Larry Fox, who is Naples' main coach in the fall for 15-man rugby. "They were not relaxed. They were stiff. In sports, that will happen if you're a little nervous. "But once they got going ... they're a very powerful team." Shore changed the momentum entirely when he broke two tackles and stayed in bounds on his five-point tally. "Maybe a foot," he said of how far he was from going out of bounds. "The guy hanging on my jersey was out of bounds.'' A former college rugby player at Maryland, Shore added, "I could taste momentum in our factor. We played with more patience, made tackles and played better as a team. We had two silly throwaways and they capitalized well on mistakes." Cameron Dolan of Estero added two scores for Naples during the second half.

Fort Myers' Tatum Walker had four scores in tournament play as Naples-Coconut Grove won its matches by a combined total of 76-4. "I got great passes thrown to me," said Walker, who used to play soccer at Fort Myers High School. "I love it." Veronica Gray-Hoppe of Fort Myers, who had some nice tackles, said defense was the key in her team's victory. "We knew they had some speedy girls on their team so we knew we had to make tackles," she said. "We also had good charisma on offense."

During the day, Orthopedic Specialists of Southwest Florida raised about $500 for the Andrew Widman Fund. Widman, a Fort Myers police officer, was killed in the line of duty. Donating 400 bottles of water, Orthopedic Specialists asked for donations of at least $1.

Club Information Florida U20 Report - Pittsburgh
Posted by bvince9 on Thursday, July 03, 2008 (19:51:43) (56 reads)

Thought I would send you a report on this past weekends results from the South Florida Select Side U - 20 teams results in the Pittsburgh Challenge Cup . First and foremost Coaches Bill Marts , Don Stramanak and Jeff Oxenrider all should be Congratulated for a job well done. The team finished in second place.
This is the third year that these gentlemen took it upon their own initiative to put a traveling squad together and compete against other upper level teams throughout the country. Because of their respective efforts the very first year drew attention to Florida Youth rugby. The result was some of our athletes were chosen to go to U.S.A. Rugby camps and several have now played for the U-17 ,18 and 19 U.S.A. Junior Eagles Teams respectively, playing both abroad and here in the United States.
Several of our teams have now had players recognized as stand out players and they include , Trojans , Brevard Red Eyes , Naples and now Weston. Those players that have been selected and played at the Junior Eagle level and or recently selected are Cameron Dolan ; Brandon Grey ; Brian Hussey ; Shane Young ; Wes Haughton ; Jamie Penca and recently invited to a camp Alex Tucci.
There have been several others that have been invited to camps to compete at the highest levels. In their ( Florida’s ) inaugural year they placed last , the second year , fourth and this year placed second . Each year with major improvements noted by many.
