Stay tuned for information on Beerfoot 2007…
In 2005 Beerfoot made it’s way down to the Ramada Inn. To anyone who attended the tourney years before and enjoyed the BIG SANDS of the south end of the island…Ramada Inn is at the North end, where partying and hotels are plentiful, but ample beach space is not. We put the pitch up close and personal with the Gulf…literally…. The pitch was roped off right at the shoreline, so when high tide came, we were a bit in the water…fun to watch – wet for the players – but all fun!
We partied after the games with wings and beer by the beach, then we got to the pub crawl… WHEN A MONSOON hit the beach and we were all stuck at whatever bar
Last year:
Women's Champions:
Lady Hammerheads, Naples Women's Club
Mens Champions:
Miami Men's Club

This is
how the tournament rolled out
(Written by: Tom Napierkowski)
The 1st annual Beerfoot Beach 7’s tournament
was held August 2nd on beautiful Ft. Myers Beach in
sunny Southwest Florida, hosted by the Hammerhead
men’s and women’s rugby club. This was
the first year to play in the sand. The Hammerhead
R.F.C. had hosted a very successful tournament on
the grass for the past 7 years, but in rugby, as in
life, it was time for a change.
The Miami Trident R.F.C. defeated
a solid Ft. Lauderdale Knights squad by a score of
27 to 17, in the culmination of what was a wonderful
day of beach rugby.
Sixteen teams, 12 men’s
and 4 women’s, showed up to vie for the inaugural
title on a spectacular August day. Skies were clear
with a refreshing breeze coming in off the Gulf of
Mexico. The scene was set waterside on a stretch of
pristine soft sand that continued off into the distance.
The day started off comfortably with temperatures
in the upper 70’s. As the tournament got off
and the competition heated up so did the weather.
The warm weather did not seem to affect the competitors.
As many took the opportunity to cool off by jumping
into the hotel pool not more than 50 yds from the
pitches or hide in the shade of the tiki bar. The
sand was soft to fall in but firm enough to plant
the foot, probably the ideal “rugby sand”,
if there is such a thing. Which may have helped to
provide an injury free day.
As pool play began on the flat,
wide pitches, 4 teams in 3 brackets showed their dominance.
Ft. Lauderdale went a perfect 3-0 in their bracket,
as did the host Hammerhead I, to advance to the semis.
Boca Raton won their bracket, 2-1, with the Tridents
emerging as the 4th team by points, also with a 2-1
record.
Ft. Lauderdale then proceeded
to beat the Hammerhead club by a score of 27 to 20.
The Tridents exacted some sweet revenge by ousting
Boca 22 to 12, who gave the Tridents their only loss
of the day, in earlier pool play. Setting up a final
with 2 of the premier teams in Florida.
It was a fast, hard hitting and free flowing game.
Ft. Lauderdale jumped on top early, but the Tridents
came back with an aggressive attack and a tenacious
defense to equal the score and then began to show
their dominance. Boca never gave in as they mounted
a solid attack of their own. In the end the Tridents
aggressive game play and fitness dominated as they
pulled away to win the hardware.
Other winners included St. Pete
Pelicans winning the plate division by beating a strong,
but young, University of Central Florida squad. The
Hammerhead II squad, beating a surprising Key West
team, won the bowl division. Notably, this was the
first tournament for a brand new Key West team. Welcome
to the club gentlemen!!!
The women’s division used
a “round robin” format to determine a
champion. A strong and well-organized attack by the
U of Central Florida allowed them to take home the
cup with wins over Florida Atlantic University, U
of Florida and tournament co-hosts the Lady Hammerhead’s.
In one of the closest matches of the day, a last minute
converted try sealed a second place finish for the
Lady Hammerhead’s with a win over a game U of
Florida team.
The day culminated in a social
at the hotel tiki bar with the presentation of trophies,
as well as the customary food and libations, which
was then followed by a pub-crawl along Ft. Myers Beach.
The revelry lasted into the night and a great time
was had by all that attended.
Thanks to the Law offices of
Eric J. Vasquez for sponsoring the event, the city
of Ft. Myers Beach for all their help and to all the
other sponsors that helped make this day a success.
The Hammerhead R.F.C. is looking forward to making
this a bigger and better tournament next year. To
